You may have noticed that a couple of my "Snakes in Sweet Suits" blogs contained audio clips of a preacher sermonizing on the Emergent and Seeker-friendly style churches that comprise a disturbingly large portion of the 'Christian' landscape in contemporary America. (If you've not noticed this, please do scroll down and give a listen, will you?).
Anyhow, the pastor is David Wilkerson, a man who

Saint Augustine: On the Lie of the "Liberal Democracy"
This passage comes from Saint Augustine's seminal work, the City of God.
(The title of my blog is, of course, not intended literally. The point is to note the similarities in agenda between those of our day who suppose that politics should not concern itself with Christian values, and those of Augustine's day who wished the same).

The Berean Call - 3.27.07
I borrow this article from The Berean Call. However, it is actually written by an Orthodox Jewish Rabbi.

There is no better term than propaganda blitzkrieg to describe what has been unleashed against Christian conservatives recently.
Consider the long list of anti-Christian books that have been published in recent months. Here are just a few samples of more than 30 similar titles, all

The Real "End Game"
Enjoy this incredible documentary from the folks at The Berean Call.
This is an astounding piece of documentary film work on what we, as Christians, need to understand about the real forces determining present day international strife. Without God's sure Word of prophecy in the Bible we would be so lost in a sea of misinformation (as is presently tearing our society apart here in America).

Snakes in Sweet Suits (Pt. IV)
You who sleep, wake up.
My brothers and my sisters, please have Christ's mercy on me and look past my many manifest sins. I am the least of you, but I am your brother, and the times are here. Are you ready? Or does the world still entice you? It entices me sometimes, and this is why I cannot live without your prayers.
This man - Joel Osteen - has made millions. Brothers and sisters,

Philia
God blesses us with friends in the strangest ways. I was just sorting through some old emails for the purposes of finding some addresses for wedding invitations, and came across this letter from my friend Luke, who, in a sense, I actually don't "know," and yet in another sense, I actually know him better than many people I actually know. A couple years ago we both spent quite a bit of time

Basic Propercality
Try though he did, and despite all of Plantinga's lucidity and cogency, Nicholas - even at the expense of his own lucidity and cogency - could not bring himself to relinquish his Classical Foundationalism.

A Scandalous Beauty (pt. III)
Nic,
I'm humbled that you were willing to open up so much to me about your reactions to the story of Mabel. Indeed, the crowns are not coming to me. And the thought that Mabel will be the first to lay them at the Master's feet only increases my own sense of unworthiness.
I think the key to your questions, awful in its simplicity and its implications, is that we are called to be faithful.

A Scandalous Beauty (pt. II)
Dear Dr. McGrew,
I got it; read it as well.
It deserves a longer comment than I can give it here at the moment. But let me just say that it touches a nerve with me. I suppose there may be a number of reasons for the sensitivity of that nerve. The trouble is that of ever coming down conclusively on which precisely is correct. The nerve is this: I wonder sometimes whether I'm not just

A Scandalous Beauty (pt. I)
This is sent to me by Dr. Timothy McGrew at Western Michigan University (one of the graduate programs I'm considering). I first began talking with Dr. McGrew after he came across my "Socrates & Elton" piece (somehow linked from the C.S. Lewis's Dangerous Idea blog site) a while back. We've been talking since then. Anyway, he sent me this short story today after a conversation on the phone about

courage
It requires courage not to surrender oneself to the ingenious or compassionate counsels of despair that would induce a man to eliminate himself from the ranks of the living; but it does not follow from this that every huckster who is fattened and nourished in self-confidence has more courage than the man who yielded to despair.

GREat news
I want to thank everyone who prayed so earnestly for my taking the GRE. I know this comes a bit late, as I took the test on Jan 25th, but I just got the "official" scores in the mail two days ago. Let me try and share this in a manner that conveys my excitement hopefully without crossing into the territory of self-aggrendizing.

Temptation is a Life Apart
"Not to leas us into temptation" means that God gives us strength and power to resist. But it does not mean that the spiritual distress is removed and done away with. No one can avoid temptation and enticement as long as we live in the flesh and have the Devil around us; and this will not change: we must bear tribulation, yes, even be in the midst of it. But that is why we pray not to fall

The Red Sea
Most of us still have fathers, mothers, sisters or brothers who got so far as the Red Sea, turned around, saw their former sins (Egyptians) chasing them on horseback, panicked, gave up, and cried out:
"Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, 'Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?' For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the

Across the Jordan; A Cross, the Jordan
On the morning of December 30th, 2006, I sat down to my kitchen table with my big ceramic mug from Ms. Gilda Hansen, coffee from my new french press, my compact, navy blue NKJV, and prayed a prayer of amazement and thanksgiving as I read the last verses of the book of Malachi, thereby completing my first full reading of the Old Testament, which thus marks my completion of my first full reading of
